Robot-assisted surgery for prostate cancer controls the disease for 10 years — ScienceDaily

The study also suggested that traditional methods of measuring the severity and possible spread of the cancer together with molecular techniques might, with further research, help to create personalized, cost-effective treatment regimens for prostate cancer patients who undergo the surgical procedure. The findings apply to men whose cancer has not spread beyond the prostate, and the results are comparable to the well-established and more invasive open surgery to remove the entire diseased prostate and some surrounding tissue. The research study is published this month online in European Urology, the official journal of the European Association of Urology. “Until our analysis, there was little available information on the long-term oncologic outcomes for patients who undergo robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, or RARP,” says Mireya Diaz, Ph.D., Director of Biostatistics at the Henry Ford’s Vattikuti Urology Institute (VUI) and lead author of the study…

Screening costs increased in older women without changing detection rates of early stage breast cancer — ScienceDaily

The effect of introduction of new breast cancer screening modalities, such as digital images, computer-aided detection (CAD), and use of ultrasound and MRI on screening costs among older women is unknown, although women over the age of 65 represent almost one-third of the total women screened in the US annually. …

Cancer study maps decade of discovery to potential anticancer agent — ScienceDaily

“What began with the question ‘what makes a particular aggressive form of breast cancer cells keep growing?’ turned into 10 years of systematic research to identify the enzyme PLK4 as a promising therapeutic target and develop a small molecule inhibitor to block it,” says Dr. Mak, Director of The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network. …

How tumors remodel their surroundings to grow: New study provides insight — ScienceDaily

The findings, published July 3 in Cancer Cell, contribute to the increasing acknowledgement that the cells and tissue surrounding a tumor — the stroma — are an integral part of cancer initiation, growth, and expansion. “Our study reveals a precise mechanism that stromal cells use to encourage the tumorigenesis of epithelial cancer cells,” said Jorge Moscat, Ph.D., director of the Cell Death and Survival Networks Program at Sanford-Burnham. “We have shown that in the stroma, p62 acts as an anti-inflammatory tumor suppressor, controlling the inflammatory environment and the signals that promote cancer…
